5 Jyotirlingas of Maharashtra — History, Mythology & Darshan Guide
1. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga — Sahyadri Hills, Pune District
Nestled at an elevation of about 3,250 feet in the Sahyadri mountain range, Bhimashankar is one of the most visually stunning of all the Jyotirlingas. Surrounded by the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary — a biodiversity hotspot and home to the Indian Giant Squirrel — the temple offers a rare combination of spiritual energy and natural splendour.
Mythology: According to the Shiva Purana, the demon Bhima (son of Kumbhakarna) terrorised the earth after receiving a boon from Lord Brahma. When Bhima imprisoned King Kamarupeshwar for refusing to stop worshipping Lord Shiva, the imprisoned king’s devotion drew Shiva’s direct intervention. Lord Shiva defeated Bhima and, at the request of the Devas and Rishis, manifested as the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga. The sweat that flowed from Shiva’s body after the battle became the Bhima River, which originates at this very spot.
What makes it unique: The Shivalinga is positioned exactly at the centre of the sanctum floor, and devotees are permitted to touch the lingam — a rare privilege not available at many Jyotirlingas. The temple follows Nagara architectural style.
Darshan Timings 2026: 4:30 AM – 3:15 PM (morning session) | 4:00 PM – 9:30 PM (evening session). Mangal Aarti begins at 4:00 AM. Best time for darshan: 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM. Abhishek and Seva booking: bhimashankar.in
Nearest base: Pune (110 km) | Mumbai (190 km) via Khed-Rajgurunagar route.
2. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga — Nashik District
Located 28 km west of Nashik in the Brahmagiri mountain range, Trimbakeshwar is one of the most significant pilgrimage towns in Maharashtra. The temple sits at the source of the sacred Godavari River, and the entire geography here — mountains, river, forest — carries a powerful spiritual charge.
Mythology: Sage Gautama performed intense penance on Brahmagiri hill to bring the Ganga to this land to atone for an inadvertent sin (accidentally killing a cow). Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva descended and manifested as the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. The Godavari, considered as sacred as the Ganga, began flowing from this very spot.
What makes it unique: Trimbakeshwar is the only Jyotirlinga with a three-faced lingam (Trimukhi Linga) representing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva simultaneously. The temple is built in Hemadpanthi style using black stone. Panchvati in Nashik (where Lord Rama lived during his exile) is just 30 km away and is often combined with a temple visit.
Darshan Timings 2026: 5:30 AM – 9:00 PM. Rudrabhishek: 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM. General darshan entry is free. Non-Hindus are typically not allowed inside the main sanctum. Devotees can touch the Shivalinga between 6:00 AM – 7:00 AM. Traditional attire (silk dhoti for men, saree/salwar for women) is required in the garbhagriha.
Nearest base: Nashik (28 km) | Mumbai (175 km)
3. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga — Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) District
Located in the village of Verul, just 1 km from the UNESCO World Heritage Ellora Caves, Grishneshwar is the twelfth and final Jyotirlinga as described in the Shiva Purana. For pilgrims completing the 12 Jyotirlinga circuit, this is where the journey culminates.
Mythology: Grishneshwar or Ghrneshwar means “Lord of Compassion.” The legend tells of a devoted woman named Kusuma who worshipped a Shivalinga daily near a lake. Her jealous co-wife drowned her son in the same lake. Kusuma’s unwavering devotion moved Lord Shiva, who restored her son to life and at her request manifested as the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga at this spot.
What makes it unique: The current red stone temple was rebuilt in 1754 by the great queen Ahilyabai Holkar (the same queen who also rebuilt the Kashi Vishwanath Temple). The five-tier shikhara rises 240 feet and is adorned with exquisite carvings. Men must enter the sanctum bare-chested. The Ellora Caves (34 rock-cut caves, 2nd century BC to 11th century AD, Hindu–Buddhist–Jain) are just 1 km away.
Darshan Timings 2026: 5:30 AM – 9:30 PM. Best darshan: 5:30 AM – 8:00 AM. No official online booking; general darshan is free. Photography restricted inside sanctum.
Nearest base: Aurangabad / Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (30 km)
4. Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga — Hingoli District
Aundha Nagnath, located in Hingoli district of Marathwada, is believed to be the oldest of all 12 Jyotirlingas and the one with the deepest mythological connection to the Mahabharata era.
Mythology: According to Hindu scripture, it was Yudhishthira (the eldest Pandava) who built this temple during the 14 years of Vanvaas (exile). The temple is described in the Mahabharata as one of the most sacred Shiva shrines, predating the Mahabharata war itself. Guru Nanak Dev, founder of Sikhism, is also said to have visited this temple during his travels through Maharashtra.
What makes it unique: The Shivalinga here faces south (unique among the Jyotirlingas), while the Gomukha (outlet) faces east. Devotees must descend into the basement to reach the Garbhagriha. There is no Nandi idol at the temple entrance — the only Jyotirlinga without this feature. The temple sprawls over 60,000 sq. ft. in Hemadpanthi style. Photography is restricted inside the sanctum.
Darshan Timings 2026: Typically 5:00 AM – 9:30 PM. Best time: early morning 5:00 AM – 8:00 AM.
Nearest base: Hingoli (20 km) | Aurangabad (160 km)
5. Parli Vaijnath Jyotirlinga — Beed District
Parli Vaijnath in Beed district is one of the most historically significant Jyotirlingas, believed to be over 3,000 years old and closely linked to the legend of Ravana. The temple was restored in the 18th century by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar.
Mythology: According to legend, Lanka’s king Ravana, devoted to Lord Shiva, offered his ten heads one by one at this spot as a sacrifice during his penance. Lord Shiva, deeply moved, appeared before him as Vaidyanath (physician of the gods) and cured his ailments. Since Lord Vishnu is said to have stored Amrit and Dhanvantari in the lingam here, touching it is believed to confer healing blessings.
What makes it unique: The lingam at Parli Vaijnath is believed to have natural healing powers. Medicinal plants surround the temple complex. The Mahashivratri festival here draws over one lakh pilgrims. The name “Parli” comes from the abundance of medicinal herbs (parilha) that once grew in this region.
Darshan Timings 2026: 5:00 AM – 9:30 PM. Abhishek and Rudrabhishek available for booking. Mahashivratri: temple open 24 hours.
Nearest base: Parli town (2 km) | Latur (80 km)

What Our Pilgrims Say — Reviews
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — “We completed the Panch Jyotirlinga Yatra in 5 days with Indian Temple Tour. Every single hotel was close to the temple, the driver knew every route, and the timing of each darshan was perfectly managed. Bhimashankar’s morning aarti in the forest mist is something I will never forget. Highly recommended for families.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — “Travelled with my 72-year-old parents. The team was incredibly considerate — slow walks at temples, early morning darshan slots, clean hotels. Grishneshwar and Aundha Nagnath were especially powerful. The Ellora Caves visit on Day 3 was a bonus we hadn’t planned. Brilliant organisation.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — “Our group of 14 completed the 7N/8D yatra and it was worth every rupee. The fact that they added Shani Shingnapur and Shirdi to the itinerary at no extra cost was a pleasant surprise. Parli Vaijnath was the most spiritually intense stop — very underrated temple.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — “Solo pilgrimage done with Indian Temple Tour. They paired me with another solo traveller which kept the cost down. Every puja arrangement at Trimbakeshwar was handled in advance. Completed all 5 darshans in 4 days. Har Har Mahadev!”
