The Vaishno Devi shrine is mentioned in ancient Hindu texts including the Puranas and the Mahabharata, making it one of the oldest documented pilgrimage sites in India. The shrine is located in a natural cave in the Trikuta Hills and is dedicated to Mata Vaishnavi — a manifestation of Adi Shakti, the primordial divine feminine energy of the universe.
The Legend of Mata Vaishno Devi
According to Hindu mythology, Mata Vaishno Devi was born as a human child named Trikuta and was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. After years of intense meditation on the Trikuta Hills, she attained the status of a Goddess. The tantric Bhairon Nath (also called Bhaironath), driven by ego and unwanted desire, pursued her. Mata hid in various places along the Trikuta Hills — including the cave at Ardhkuwari, where she meditated for nine months. When Bhairon continued to pursue her, she finally revealed her divine Mahakali form and beheaded him. Day 2: Sacred Trek to Vaishno Devi Bhawan — Darshan

The Trek Route (Katra to Bhawan — 13 km):
